GEE HYE LEE

At the tender age of three, Gee Hye Lee began taking classical piano lessons in her hometown of Seoul, South Korea. She quickly received numerous awards for her talents, and everything seemed to point her towards a career as a classical pianist. But the moment Gee Hye was given a recording of ”Kind Of Blue” for her 16th birthday, she realized she wanted only one thing: Jazz!

Through Miles Davis she discovered Bill Evans first and then Herbie Hancock, who to this day remains her biggest inspiration with his innovative and passionate playing. “To me, Jazz is freedom,” says Gee Hye. “I can fully express myself, and I continue to discover new sides of myself through playing. Jazz makes me happy.” This experience carries over to her audience, thrilling critics everywhere.

As she transitioned from studying classical music to jazz, Gee Hye moved from Seoul to Stuttgart, Germany in 1996. She studied with jazz musician and composer Paul Schwarz and in 2003, completed her diploma with honors at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart. That same year she was given a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. Upon her return to Stuttgart in 2005, Gee Hye won the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation Competition and Scholarship. In July 2012, she was honored with the Jazz Award of Baden-Württemberg.

Gee Hye always believed the strict separation of jazz, soul and pop music was senseless and has therefore pursued various jazz, hip-hop and soul projects throughout her academic career. As a result, she discovered her own unique style and has given numerous concerts playing both the classical piano and the electric Fender Rhodes. Her first CD “Midnight Walk” was released with her trio band by Universal Music Korea in August 2009. In addition, Gee Hye Lee has performed nearly every Monday with a variety of new musicians between 2006 and 2019 at Stuttgart’s iconic jazz club ”Kiste” for a total of over 500 performances. Showcasing her enormous range, Gee Hye released the CD ”geenius Monday” in 2010 and “password:ilovejazz” in 2015. Her second trio band album, “Lights” in July 2012. Since 2014, she is a featured member of the Frank Kuruc Quartet.

Gee Hye Lee has played in many television shows and gives innumerable concerts, including at the Jazz Festival Ascona (Switzerland) and JAZZOPEN (Germany), Jarasum International Jazz Festival (South Korea). In the jazz scene she is known as a fantastic, empathetic companion and also as an outstanding soloist. She has already worked with many different jazz musicians in various projects – currently on her 3rd trio album with the incomparable Joel Locher on double bass and the unique drummer Mareike Wiening. The trio plays a melodic jazz that is profound, light and uplifting at the same time. Most of the pieces were created in lockdown and during the quarantine period in 2020 and transform the dark into light of hope.

Im zarten Alter von drei beginnt Gee Hye Lee, Unterricht zu nehmen, klassisches Klavier, in Seoul / Südkorea. Sie erhält diverse Auszeichnungen, und alles sieht nach einer Karriere als klassische Pianistin aus. Doch als Gee Hye zu ihrem 16. Geburtstag “Kind Of Blue” geschenkt bekommt, will sie nur noch eines: Jazz machen! Über Miles Davis entdeckt sie zuerst Bill Evans und dann Herbie Hancock, der mit seinem innovativen und hingebungsvollen Spiel seither ihr Vorbild ist. “Jazz bedeutet für mich Freiheit,” sagt Gee Hye. “Ich kann mich darin ausdrücken, beim Spielen entdecke ich immer neue Seiten an mir. Jazz macht mich glücklich.” Das überträgt sich auf ihre Zuhörer, die Kritiker sind begeistert.

Auf den Wechsel vom klassischen Fach zum Jazz folgt 1996 der räumliche Wechsel von Seoul nach Stuttgart. Gee Hye nimmt Unterricht bei Paul Schwarz und schließt 2003 ihr Diplom mit Auszeichnung an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart ab. Im gleichen Jahr erhält sie ein Stipendium am Berklee College of Music in Boston. Zurück in Stuttgart gewinnt Gee Hye den Wettbewerb der Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg 2005 und dazugehörende das Stipendium. Im Juli 2012 bekommt sie den Jazzpreis Baden-Württemberg.

Ihre erste eigene Trio CD “Midnight Walk” wurde im August (2009) bei Universal Music Korea veröffentlicht. Daneben tritt Gee Hye Lee zwischen 2006 und 2019 montags in der Stuttgarter “Kiste” auf, mit immer neuen Musikern, inzwischen über 500 Mal. Einen Eindruck der enormen Bandbreite, die Gee Hye dabei an den Tag legt, gibt ihre 2010 erschienene CD “Geenius Monday” und “password:ilovejazz” im 2015. Das zweite Trio Album, “Lights” ist seit Juli 2012 zu hören. Seit 2012 ist sie Mitglied des Frank Kurucs Quartett.

Gee Hye Lee spielte in vielen Fernsehshows und gibt ungezählte Konzerte, unter anderem auf dem Jazz Festival Ascona (Schweiz) und JAZZOPEN (Deutschland), Jarasum International Jazz Festival (Südkorea). In der Jazzszene kennt man sie als fantastische, einfühlsame Begleiterin und ebenso als herausragende Solistin. Gee Hye Lee arbeitete bereits mit vielen verschiedenen Jazzmusikern in unterschiedlichen Projekten zusammen. Im Oktober 2021 wird sie ihr drittes Trio Album “What Matters Most” mit dem großartigen Bassisten Joel Locher und der Ausnahme Schlagzeugerin und Komponistin Mareike Wiening veröffentlichen. Mit Joel verbindet sie eine 20 jährige Freundschaft die bereits in zahlreichen musikalischen Projekten zu hören ist. Mareike Wiening ist das jüngste Mitglied. Sie hat sechs Jahre in New York gelebt und pendelt seit 2019 zwischen Amerika und Köln.

Das Trio spielt einen melodischen Jazz, der zugleich tiefgründig, leicht und schwebend ist. Die meisten Stücke sind im Lockdown und während der Quarantäne-Zeit in 2020 entstanden und verwandeln das Dunkle in hoffnungsvolles Licht.
