Kenji Herbert
Kenji Herbert is a Vienna-based guitarist, composer and improvising musician. With an upbringing in Osaka & Kobe Japan, and a decade spent at the pulsing heartbeat of the creative music scene in New York City, his versatile and individual sound is similarly at home in a wide range of musical contexts.
Currently he leads a trio featuring Vinicius Cajado and Lukas König, with their album “A Million Forests of the Fall” to be released on November 21, 2024 through Unit Records. Prior releases under his own name include “As if For Now” (Urchin Records, 2021), “The Way the Light Falls” (Inner Circle Music, 2016) and Superluminal (2012). He is a duo partner to Christian Li as documented on “Li/Herbert”, Vinicius Cajado on “Uni” and Yusuke Yamamoto on “Ambient Works.” He co-leads The Scruffy Herberts with his uncle Peter Herbert and is a member of Andras Des Quartet, Matthew Halpin Group, Jure Pukl’s Junk Food, Susanna Gartmayer’s Sugar 6TTT, Georgia Weber’s Sleeved Hearts and has worked closely with Arooj Aftab, Yuhan Su, Songyi Jeon and Zack Nestel-Patt among many others. Along with Keisuke Matsuno, he was the subject of Misaki Matsui’s 2017 documentary “mit Kenji & Keisuke -Brooklyn, New York-“
Herbert received his formal education at the Music Academy in Basel, Switzerland (2006-2008) where he studied with Wolfgang Muthspiel and graduated from Berklee College of Music (2009-2011), where he was mentored by Mick Goodrick and David Tronzo. He was an inaugural member of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute under the artistic direction of Danilo Perez.

Gemeinsam mit seinem Onkel Peter Herbert leitet er die Band The Scruffy Herberts und ist ein Mitglied von Andras Des Quartet, Matthew Halpin Group, Jure Pukl's Junk Food, Susanna Gartmayer's Sugar 6TTT, Georgia Weber's Sleeved Hearts und arbeitete unter anderen eng mit Arooj Aftab, Yuhan Su, Songyi Jeon und Zack Nestel-Patt zusammen. Er war gemeinsam mit Keisuke Matsuno einer der Hauptdarsteller in Misaki Matsuis Dokumentarfilm „mit Kenji & Keisuke -Brooklyn, New York-“, das in 2017 erschien. Seine Ausbildung erhielt er an der Musikakademie der Stadt Basel bei Wolfgang Muthspiel, und machte seinen Abschluss am Berklee College of Music, wo er unter Mick Goodrick und David Tronzo studierte. Er war ein Mitglied der ersten Klasse bei der Gründung des Berklee Global Jazz Institute unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Danilo Perez.

“A Million Forests of the Fall” is the debut album of the trio consisting of Kenji Herbert (guitar), Vinicius Cajado (bass) and Lukas König (drums). They came together for the first time in Brooklyn, New York and combine the sound aesthetics of an indie band with the art of improvisation at the highest level. Kenji Herbert’s at times explosive, at others contemplative compositions are constantly expanded and reinvented through the witty interplay between the three musicians. With roots in Japan, Brazil and Austria, the band draws from equally diverse sources of inspiration, which is reflected in their unmistakable sound.

Riff is self-explanatory. Annie is a nod to St. Vincent, a.k.a. Annie Clark. Intro is a collective improvisation over A Million Forests of the Fall, a title inspired by a dear friend’s remark: "I wish those arpeggios were like an installation in a forest somewhere, just on an infinite loop..." Shinkirou is the Japanese word for mirage. I've never actually seen one myself. Oblong Oolong reflects my affection for East Asian tea traditions. Floating is a meditation over a bass ostinato.

"A Million Forests of the Fall" ist das Debütalbum von dem Trio bestehend aus Kenji Herbert (Gitarre), Vinicius Cajado (Bass) und Lukas König (Schlagzeug). Sie trafen sich zum ersten Mal in Brooklyn, New York zusammen und kombinieren die Klangästhetik einer Indieband mit Improvisationskunst auf dem höchsten Niveau. Die teilweise explosiven, teilweise kontemplativen Kompositionen aus Kenji Herberts Hand, werden stets mit einem unverkennbaren Spielwitz zwischen den drei Musikern ausgedehnt und neu erfunden. Mit Wurzeln in Japan, Brasilien und Österreich, bedient sich die Band an ebenso vielfältigen Inspirationsquellen, die sich in ihren unverkennbaren Sound widerspiegelt.
