MICHEL VRYDAG - MAPPING ROOTS
« Eclectic and full of surprises » is something that can describe bass player and composer Michel Vrydag. Active on the Jazz scene as a sideman, he leads and composes for his own trio « Mapping Roots » (Bram Weijters on piano and Daniel Jonkers on the drums). We have heard him on various Jazz projects and encounters with people like Bram Weijters, Bo Vanderwerf, Fabian Fiorini, Stéphane Mercier, Xavier Roge, Antoine Pierre, Bruno Grollet, Laurent Mercier, Bruno Castellucci, Pierre Bernard, Sabin Todorov, Lionnel Beuvens, Casimir Liberski, Tutu Poane, Toni Mora, Paolo Loveri, Dimitri Delvaux, Vincent Thékal, Alex Koo, Bert Cools, Stijn Cools, Eerik Bogaerts, Kris Duerinckx and most of the Belgian musicians of his generation.
Besides his activities on the Jazz scene, he also tours and writes music with the Louvat Bros, a Folk & World music group with three albums recorded to date and winner of the Liz Meyer award for the most innovative European Bluegrass Band in 2012. He also participates in South American and African music projects (some with Josaphat Hounnou - drummer of Lionel Loueke) and plays with Balakumar Paralinangam, the highly regarded percussion player of Carnatic music (South India and Sri-Lanka). He is also active on the Rock and Metal scene. In 2013, He toured with Paul Di’Anno the original singer of the legendary Iron Maiden on his Farewell tour in France. He also plays with rock band Z-Band and has recorded two albums with them.
He has toured in Belgium, across Europe (Luxembourg, Spain, France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, United Kingdom…), several times in Canada and the United States as well as in India where he shared scenes with musicians from Kashmir, Rajasthan, West-Bengal and Siberia. Hundreds of wonderful concerts, of human experiences that opened his musical and personal horizon.

« Michel Vrydag, the bass-player, clearly guided us to a super jazz world, all set for accompanying his partners, his soli are bright and luminous. They brightened up the performance in spite of the low register of the bass sound » FD – Jazz For you – Jazz Concert Review 2019.
« Michel Vrydag, Bass player … but is this enough to describe this virtuoso musician? Originating from the Belgian jazz scene, he performs incredible jazz soli, gives a rhythmic cohesion to the group and I can only recommend to carefully listen to « New Sweet Home », a banjo virtuoso piece that the best specialists would not disown, to understand what I am trying to describe with limited words. Here are 15 breath taking titles. Those who like instrumental music can now risk opting for this blue grass/new grass pearl made in Belgium » D Guillot – The Bluegrass Times, Sept 2019.

Description
« First Daylight » is the first album of the Belgian jazz trio « Mapping Roots ». « Mapping Roots» presents lively, organic, luminous music, open to the world, nourished by improvisation and at the borders of many styles: a jazz universe with rhythms inspired by traditional music from several continents.
This double album contains 14 compositions of the bass player-leader of the band, Michel Vrydag. Alongside inventive and experienced musicians, Bram Weijters (piano) and Daniel Jonkers (drums), the trio delivers surprising and bright music. After concerts in Belgium and abroad, « First Daylight » will be released on January 28, 2022 by Unit Records.
"Play me a song that tells me about the place you come from" is the starting point of the compositions. In this narrative flow, the epic and cinematic themes open doorways to vivid improvisation: interaction, groove, rhythmic feel, abandon and harmonic colors paying lip-service to the collective purpose of narration.
Allow yourself to be surprised by the pulse of the story that this trio tells you with great complicity!
Line-up:
Michel Vrydag: Bass and Compositions (www.michelvrydag.com)
Bram Weijters: Piano (www.bramweijters.com)
Daniel Jonkers: Drums (https://www.facebook.com/daniel.jonkers.9)
More about the music:
"Mapping Roots... I dreamt then wrote, following my imagination, as if on a journey that blended all the wonderful music I had heard together, paying tribute to all the people who in one way or another make the world a brighter place. They are an endless source of inspiration to me and I feel immense gratitude towards them."
The opening title « First Daylight » develops a long epic theme before improvisation and is inspired by the joy of the birth of a child.
The theme of « Dharma » is based on the concept of impermanence of phenomena and their interdependence. « Everyone is unique, so don't be afraid to write music that is also unique » were the words of the great Belgian composer and guitar player Pierre Vandormael, a searcher and a pioneer who influenced the entire contemporary Belgian Jazz scene to whom the « Tales of a Thousand Lakes » cinematic landscape title is dedicated. This tune uses principles developed by Pierre Vandormael in his music and his theory of composition.
« La société du spectacle » is a title inspired by the essay of the French philosopher Guy Debord: "The whole life of societies in which the modern conditions of production prevail announces itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. »
« Rising Tide » presents a multiplicity of rhythmic approaches borrowed from African, Turkish and European traditions based on 9/8 beats.
« Septentrion » is the Latin name of the constellation to which the North Star belongs, the one that guides lost travelers. An epic journey with impressionistic harmony developed on a Misra Tala, a rhythm structure in 7/4.
« Ballade A3 » is a jazz ballad with some harmonic developments borrowed from the jazz of the 60’s.
« Les Moutons » presents a mix between funk grooves and some harmonic language borrowed from the French composer Olivier Messiaen.
« Chant » is written as a simple folk melody and dedicated to our parents and their wisdom.
« Worlds » borrows some elements of the ethereal worlds sometimes created by electronic music and prog metal through the use of loops and delays.
« Treize » is a number that for some symbolises the end of something and the beginning of something else. A new beginning, positive like the vibe of this mixed rhythmic architecture based around the numbers 13, 3 and 4 that made the melody and harmonic flows on a simple pop beat. The melody played by the bass with a capo is influenced by the use of open strings that we found in folk music styles like bluegrass and Irish music.
« Bright » is a swing tune with harmonies in the style of the 60’s written for all the people who in one way or another make the world a brighter, more decent place.
« Réminiscence » is a vague or incomplete memory, difficult to locate, like the music played in Indonesia by Gamelans at the origins of the writing of this tune.
« The Way of the Wizard » piece closes the journey. The magic of improvisation comes from letting the unexpected happen and accepting it without judging it: a written theme with long sessions open to free improvisation.
