Moritz Stahl
As a sought-after sideman and co-leader, Moritz Stahl is firmly anchored in the Munich scene and has also established himself in the German jazz scene beyond. The enormous range of his musical influences - from traditional jazz to contemporary trends as well as progressive, experimental and electronic music - is reflected in the diversity of the ensembles in which he plays. This has earned him the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize, the Kurt Maas Jazz Award and the special prize of the Art Promotion Prize of the City of Augsburg and, most recently, the BMW Welt Young Artist Jazz Award.
With his new project, he is now presenting his interpretation of the modern jazz quintet, bringing together renowned musicians from all over Germany: Leif Berger from Cologne on drums, Julius Windisch from Berlin on piano and bassist Lorenz Heigenhuber from Leipzig. The ensemble is rounded off by Stahl's long-time friend and accompanist, guitarist Philipp Schiepek.

Moritz Stahl is a dreamer. Better yet: he has a dream! Of a music in, which he finds new ways to express himself to think more freely to play more freely to interact more freely. The dream has come true! "Traumsequenz" is the first album as a bandleader by the saxophonist born in 1991 and raised in Bobingen Swabia. A long inner journey lies behind this album a lot of thought has gone into this music and into the composition of the band as well.
Moritz Stahl known in the Bavarian and German jazz scene as a member of the Jazzrausch Bigband saxophonist in the Philipp Schiepek Quartet and the Luca Zambito Quartet as well as in singer Fiona Grond's trio and many other ensembles began making plans in 2022 to appear as a bandleader with his own permanent formation and his own compositions. As open forms and free improvisations fascinated him more and more during this time he looked for players who could fit into such a band concept - and he found what he was looking for. Drummer Leif Berger born in Münster is among the most sought-after young figures on the Cologne scene. His flair for spacial colorful drumming is great yet he never loses his drive. Julius Windisch from Stuttgart is active in the Berlin scene as a pianist and keyboarder and has nurtured his special harmonic feeling in free-improvising projects refining it to perfection. His open ears allow him to react with lightning speed to all musical circumstances. Moritz Stahl had never played with either of them before but he could clearly hear their sound within his own when he brought this quintet together. The band's bassist is Lorenz Heigenhuber. The double bass player who resides in Leipzig yet hails from Bavaria is active in various bands and is currently in particular demand through a trio with pianist Olga Reznichenko. Even the most complex of tonal sequences flow effortlessly from his fingers with a rich woody and round sound. Moritz Stahl collaborates frequently and exclusively with guitarist Philipp Schiepek in various bands and the two friends have exchanged ideas intensively about this particular project.
Moritz Stahl brought these musicians together for several concerts at Munich's Jazzclub Unterfahrt in the summer of 2022. Without even a rehearsal on the first evening the saxophonist presented his fellow players with the complex material that makes up the repertoire of the album "Traumsequenz" and the dream immediately took shape on stage. During that summer week the band grew together and sensed a need to record their music. The quintet met again in May 2023 meanwhile without playing a single concert but Moritz Stahl had once again put a lot of thought into the compositions. They were able to directly recreate magic of the live concerts at the Kyberg Studio in Munich. Moritz Stahl’s dream of very personal exciting stimulating and horizon-broadening music became reality.
„Traumsequenz" impresses throughout in terms of sound and design. Guitarist Philipp Schiepek, who also frequently performs classical concert guitar, opens up unusual sound spaces with the filigree tones of the nylon strings in such a context, but here too he weaves his tonal ideas into a dense web while the music loses none of its power due to the transparent sound. At no point is the album „Traumsequenz" cautious; all five participants embark on an uncertain journey through Moritz Stahl's compositions. He leaves space for himself as a soloist, but also gives room to breathe in many places. His rich, multi-faceted tenor saxophone tone is present, but never dominant. Never is the saxophonist or any other player concerned with effect, as the music develops rhythmically and harmonically, a passionate push-and-pull. In every note you can feel the experience of these young, but nevertheless immensely expressive improvisers. This is not the hasty debut work of a burgeoning talent, this is well thought-out and sophisticated music by a musician on par with the greats of contemporary international jazz. Especially when Moritz Stahl's soprano saxophone is heard – he only recently re-integrated this instrument into his repertoire - you can sense the musical spirit of exploration and the desire to discover new sounds. Stahl's expressive spectrum is reminiscent of Wayne Shorter: not a bad aesthetic role model. Under the name "odizouu", Moritz Stahl is also active as an artist and producer in the field of electronic music, and this side also comes through very subtly on "Traumsequenz" in the five "Episodes". These are freely improvised parts from different takes of the piece "Procrastination Episode". Stahl liked each of these completely improvised parts so much that he sought a way to include them all on the album as independent pieces. Moritz Stahl and Philipp Schiepek subsequently added saxophone and guitar parts to these passages with piano, bass and drums. The result is a commentary on the previously recorded music, a magnificent homage to the free moment."Traumsequenz" is a statement by a bandleader who has not only found his own path and his way of expression, but who continues the search in a self-confident manner.
