The duo "Flute 'n' Bass" with jazz flutist Stephanie Wagner and this year's Darmstadt Music Award winner Norbert Dömling, double bass, arouses curiosity - because it represents an absolute rarity in jazz.

The debut CD of the duo is an extraordinarily successful combination of high and low instrument, which seems unexpectedly light and transparent.
Sound and rhythm experiments and percussive playing on both instruments as well as beatboxing on the flute do not miss a drumset.
The variably used sound of Stephanie Wagner's C-, alto- and bass flute and the deep, warm and earthy double bass of Norbert Dömling create wonderful contrasts, timbres and moods and surprise anew in every piece.
Filigree timbres, solid groove, free, orderly and unexpected can be found in the duo's original compositions.

"Flute 'n' Bass" formed in late 2019/early 2020 just before Corona time. It rehearsed pieces for the challenging special duo instrumentation without harmony and rhythm instrument, and wrote more and more original compositions which fit for the duo.
An EPK video was still being made in early 2020, then creativity was put on hold. The summer of 2020 offered the opportunity to rehearse outdoors and the first concerts also took place outdoors. After several concerts in 2021 and 2022
the duo now presents the debut CD "Traces".

In this project two generations of musicians have found each other in their respective uniqueness and show what the interaction of musical creativity can mean.
"Flute 'n' Bass" unerringly pave their way through their original compositions, always with a fresh joy of playing and the desire to discover and try out new things.


Stephanie Wagner:
"I love playing with double bass only. It means a lot of freedom. You can hear all nuances and timbres and we both can develop our individual sounds.
What I like is that there is a lot of plasticity and transparency between the high and low register. It's also a constant challenge and responsibility
in terms of harmony, rhythm and timing"

Norbert Dömling:
"Playing in a duo is wonderful and merciless at the same time.
On the one hand it allows the greatest possible freedom in shaping the music and the improvisations, on the other hand each note is naked and transparent, as if viewed through a magnifying glass. The intention is to create different feelings and moods with our music, in a way that doesn't lack any harmony instrument or drums."

Stephanie Wagner studied classical flute and jazz flute at the Musikhochschule Mainz and as a scholarship holder at the renowned "Berklee College of Music" in Boston/USA. She also worked as a lecturer for classical and jazz flute at the Musikhochschule Mainz from 1995 to 2003.

With her quintet "Stephanie Wagners Quinsch" Stephanie Wagner was one of the prize winners in the competition of the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Jazz, Rheinland-Pfalz (LAG Jazz RP) in 2010.
In 2010 followed CD recordings with the trio "Jeeep" and the duo "jazzgems".
In 2011 she received the Jazz Prize of the city of Worms as an outstanding instrumentalist on a high technical level, as well as for her innovative work in various formations, in which she brings her personality unmistakably.
In 2015, Schott-Verlag published her jazz flute school "Play Jazzflute - now!"
whose content she teaches in numerous workshops.
She presented the second CD of "Stephanie Wagners Quinsch" with her own compositions in 2016.
In addition, in recent years she has performed with the international quartet "playground4". The CD of the quartet was released in 2020 by Jazzhausmusik/Cologne.

On the flute Stephanie Wagner explores the full spectrum of sound, uses modern playing techniques such as beatboxing and electronic effects and performs worldwide.

Norbert Dömling began his musical career in 1973 in the band "Missus Beastly", a Krautrock band with jazz and world music influences.

Since then he has played concerts with top musicians all over the world and participated in numerous LPs, CDs, radio and TV recordings. (Toto Blanke, Biréli Lagrène, Joachim Kühn, Jasper van ́t Hoff, Stu Goldberg, Billy Cobham, Trilok Gurtu, Ramesh Shotam, Christoph Lauer, Charlie Mariano, Tony Lakatos, Toots Thielemans, Tomasz Stańko, among others).

He was the initiator of projects like "Jazz meets Tango", a trio with Juan José Mosalini on bandoneon or "Family of Percussion meets Bass-Strings" with Peter Giger, Tom Nicholas and Dom Um Romão (percussion), Vitold Rek and Jürgen Wuchner on double bass and played with Ali Neander in the "Fifty Fingers Acoustic Orchestra".

From 1993 Norbert Dömling also gave solo concerts with electric bass and loop delay, which was an absolute novelty at that time.

Current project is the trio "Dömling-Wagner-Mackenthun" with Martin Wagner on accordion and Jens Mackenthun on guitar. Furthermore there is the collaboration with the exceptional percussionist Carlo Rizzo (IT) on polytimbral tambourine and other frame drums, saxophonist Eric Plandé (FRA), guitarist John Stowell (USA) and pianist Bob Degen (USA). Brand new is the duo with flutist Stephanie Wagner.

This year he also received the Darmstadt Music Prize.

Das Duo „Flute 'n' Bass“ mit der Jazzflötistin Stephanie Wagner und dem diesjährigen Preisträger des Darmstädter Musikpreises Norbert Dömling, Kontrabass, weckt die Neugier - denn es stellt im Jazz eine absolute Rarität dar.

Die Debüt-CD des Duos ist eine außerordentlich gelungene Kombination von hohem und tiefem Instrument, die ungeahnt leicht und transparent wirkt.
Sound- und Rhythmus-Experimente und die perkussive Spielweise auf beiden Instrumenten sowie das Beatboxen auf der Flöte lassen kein Schlagzeug vermissen.
Der variabel eingesetzte Klang von Stephanie Wagners C-, Alt-und Bassflöte und der tiefe, warme und erdige Kontrabass von Norbert Dömling schaffen wunderbare Kontraste, Klangfarben und Stimmungen und überraschen in jedem Stück aufs Neue.
Filigrane Klangfarben, handfester Groove, Freies, Geordnetes und Unerwartetes finden sich in den Eigenkompositionen des Duos wieder.

„Flute 'n' Bass“ formierte sich Ende 2019/Anfang 2020 kurz vor der Corona-Zeit. Es probte Stücke für die herausfordernde spezielle Duo-Besetzung ohne Harmonie- und Rhythmusinstrument und schrieb immer mehr Eigenkompositionen, die auf das Duo passend zugeschnitten sind.
Ein EPK-Video ist Anfang 2020 noch entstanden, dann wurde die Kreativität auf Eis gelegt. Der Sommer 2020 bot die Möglichkeit im Freien zu proben und auch die ersten Konzerte fanden im Freien statt. Nach diversen Konzerten in 2021 und 2022 legt
das Duo jetzt die Debüt-CD "Traces" vor.

In diesem Projekt haben sich zwei Musikergenerationen in ihrer jeweiligen Einmaligkeit gefunden und zeigen, was das Zusammenwirken von musikalischer Kreativität bedeuten kann.
„Flute 'n' Bass“ bahnen sich zielsicher den Weg durch ihre Eigenkompositionen, immer mit frischer Spielfreude und dem Wunsch, Neues zu entdecken und auszuprobieren.

Ein Duo mit Seltenheitswert und Experimentierfreude!

Stephanie Wagner:
„Ich liebe es nur mit Kontrabass zu spielen. Es bedeutet sehr viel Freiheit für mich. Man kann all Nuancen und Farben hören und beide Instrumente können ihren individuellen Sound entwickeln. Ich mag, dass es sehr viel Plastizität und Transparenz zwischen dem hohen und tiefen Register gibt. Es ist ausserdem eine konstante Herausforderung und Verantwortung was Harmonien, Rhythmus und Timing angeht.“

Norbert Dömling:
„Im Duo zu spielen ist wunderbar schön und gnadenlos zugleich. Einerseits erlaubt es größtmögliche Freiheit in der Gestaltung der Musik mit den Improvisationen, andererseits ist jede Note nackt und transparent, wie mit einem Vergrößerungsglas betrachtet. Unsere Absicht ist es, mit unserer Musik verschiedene Gefühle und Stimmungen zu erzeugen, auf eine Art und Weise, die kein Harmonieinstrument oder Schlagzeug vermissen lässt.“

Stephanie Wagner studierte klassische Flöte und Jazz-Querflöte an der Musikhochschule Mainz und als Stipendiatin am renommierten „Berklee College of Music” in Boston/USA. Auch arbeitete sie als Dozentin für klassische und Jazz-Querflöte von 1995 bis 2003 an der Musikhochschule Mainz.

Mit ihrem Quintett „Stephanie Wagners Quinsch“ zählte Stephanie Wagner 2010 zu den Preisträgern im Wettbewerb der Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Jazz, Rheinland-Pfalz (LAG Jazz RP).
2010 folgten CD-Aufnahmen mit dem Trio „Jeeep“ und dem Duo „jazzgems“.
2011 erhielt sie den Jazzpreis der Stadt Worms als herausragende Instrumentalistin auf hohem technischem Niveau, sowie für ihre innovative Arbeit in unterschiedlichen Formationen, in denen sie ihre Persönlichkeit unüberhörbar einbringt.
Im Schott-Verlag erschien 2015 ihre Jazz-Flötenschule „Play Jazzflute – now!“ deren Inhalt sie in zahlreichen Workshops vermittelt.
Die zweite CD von „Stephanie Wagners Quinsch“ mit ihren Eigenkompositionen legte sie 2016 vor.
Darüberhinaus konzertierte sie in den letzten Jahren mit dem internationalen Quartett „playground4“. Die CD des Quartetts erschien in 2020 bei Jazzhausmusik/Köln.

Auf der Querflöte lotet Stephanie Wagner das volle Klangspektrum aus, bedient sich moderner Spieltechniken wie z.B. dem Beatboxen und elektronischer Effekte und konzertiert weltweit.

In diesem Jahr erhielt er außerdem den Darmstädter Musikpreis.
