Vilkka Wahl - KAIHO

Quasicrystal is KAIHO’s first album and brings with it a new sound into the European jazz scene. The music revolves mostly around the compositions from bandleader Vilkka Wahl, but other band members write too. It moves through a range of sounds with one foot embedded in traditions and phrasing of jazz, whilst the other one wondering off to explore influences and sounds varying from alternative rock through cinematic soundscapes to influences from the impressionists. It’s quite a mix for sure, but one arising from honest melodic and rhythmic ideas - avoiding the pitfalls of pretentiousness and resulting in a fresh sound where the wide ranging expressiveness of the bands soloists can reach out to explore this music and its spirit. The guitar, saxophone and moog synthesiser blend together for reflections with piano and the rhythm section. There is plenty of sense and sensibility, but also burning swing and wicked grooving to take the listener on a musical journey to the cosmos.

Quasicrystals are suggested to be a fifth form of matter - an atomic structure that is perfectly ordered, filling up all the space, but not symmetric. Perfect in its inherent imperfection. That’s a beautiful and inspiring thought - and one fitting for the music. KAIHO’s debut album is an ode to the perfect imperfections in all of us, whether buried deep inside or boldly showing off.

KAIHO is Finnish for nostalgia or longing and might be used to describe the sometimes melancholic mind set of the Finnish folk. There is a sense of redemption in the word, too. Longing for something, wether from the past or in the future, requires one to reach inside and find the place where this object of longing touches the soul. That place can be also the birthplace of creation and nourishment for the soul, in the form of a thought, a poem, a song. And a creation born from that place has an innate honesty to itself.

In December 2022 I was flying to Finland to record this album with this wonderful band. For the flight I had downloaded a Werner Herzog documentary about meteorites, because the wonders of the cosmos and space have always resonated with me, a sort of spirituality I would guess. As I was watching the film, suddenly there was the great Norwegian jazz guitarist Jon Larsen on a Oslo roof top, playing beautifully with his guitar, before starting to explain how he had discovered the world’s first micrometeorites on that very rooftop. These micrometeorites are absolutely stunning artwork by the cosmos and I was completely mesmerised by their nature and beauty. As I was reading further about micrometeorites, I found that we have discovered some of them to host quasicrystal’s - a crystalline structure that is ordered, an atomic structure perfectly filling up all the space, but isn’t symmetric like crystals. I thought it is the most beautiful thing - something that is perfect despite being inherently imperfect. I felt that something had aligned with me, the recording, Jon Larsen and the micrometeorites - and I knew I have to call this album “Quasicrystal”!

Before this, as I was writing new material to follow up my debut album “Nebula” (Vilkka Wahl Quintet), I realised I want this music to be associated more to this particular group of musicians, a band, rather than myself. The compositions set the mood and function as the framework for the music, but for me it was important to recognise the musical and personal input of each musician in this group. The music comes alive in the players’ souls and gets its form in their interactions. Hence I really wanted to establish a band around this music, rather than try and personify it in myself - embrace and celebrate it for what it truly is: meeting of spirits, perfect in their inherent imperfections.

Maintaining international line-ups, such as KAIHO’s, comes with a set of challenges for sure, but I think we have found a unique sound for ourselves somewhere in this European jazz universe, so hopefully this is just the beginning of the flight of this quasicrystal!

Quasicrystal ist das erste Album von KAIHO und bringt damit einen neuen Sound in die europäische Jazzszene. Die Musik dreht sich hauptsächlich um die Kompositionen von Bandleader Vilkka Wahl, aber auch andere Bandmitglieder schreiben. Sie bewegt sich durch eine Reihe von Klängen, wobei ein Fuß in den Traditionen und der Phrasierung des Jazz verankert ist, während der andere sich aufmacht, um Einflüsse und Klänge zu erkunden, die von alternativem Rock über “filmische” Klanglandschaften bis hin zu Einflüssen der Impressionisten reichen. Es ist sicherlich eine interessante Mischung, aber eine, die aus ehrlichen melodischen und rhythmischen Ideen entsteht - und die die Fallstricke der Prätention vermeidet und zu einem frischen Sound führt, bei dem die weitreichende Ausdruckskraft der Solisten der Band die Hand ausstrecken kann, um diese Musik und ihren Geist zu erkunden. Die Gitarre, das Saxophon und der Moog-Synthesizer verschmelzen bei den Reflexionen mit dem Klavier und der Rhythmusgruppe. Es gibt viel Sinn und Sensibilität, aber auch brennenden Swing und verruchtes Grooven, um den Hörer auf eine musikalische Reise in den Kosmos mitzunehmen.

Quasikristalle sollen eine fünfte Form der Materie sein - eine atomare Struktur, die perfekt geordnet ist, den ganzen Raum ausfüllt, aber nicht symmetrisch ist. Perfekt in ihrer inhärenten Unvollkommenheit. Das ist ein schöner und inspirierender Gedanke - und ein passender für die Musik. Das Debütalbum von KAIHO ist eine Ode an die perfekte Unvollkommenheit in uns allen, ob sie nun tief in uns verborgen ist oder sich kühn zur Schau stellt.

KAIHO ist finnisch für Nostalgie oder Sehnsucht und könnte die manchmal melancholische Grundhaltung der Finnen beschreiben. In dem Wort steckt auch ein Gefühl der Erlösung. Wenn man sich nach etwas sehnt, sei es aus der Vergangenheit oder aus der Zukunft, muss man nach innen gehen und den Ort finden, an dem dieses Objekt der Sehnsucht die Seele berührt. Dieser Ort kann auch der Geburtsort von Schöpfung und Nahrung für die Seele sein, in Form eines Gedankens, eines Gedichts, eines Liedes. Und eine Schöpfung, die von diesem Ort ausgeht, hat eine angeborene Ehrlichkeit an sich.

Im Dezember 2022 flog ich nach Finnland, um dieses Album mit dieser wunderbaren Band aufzunehmen. Für den Flug hatte ich mir einen Dokumentarfilm von Werner Herzog über Meteoriten heruntergeladen, denn die Wunder des Kosmos und des Weltraums haben mich schon immer beeindruckt, eine Art Spiritualität, würde ich sagen. Während ich mir den Film ansah, stand plötzlich der große norwegische Jazz-Gitarrist Jon Larsen auf einem Dach in Oslo und spielte wunderschön auf seiner Gitarre, bevor er zu erklären begann, wie er auf eben diesem Dach die ersten Mikrometeoriten der Welt entdeckt hatte. Diese Mikrometeoriten sind absolut atemberaubende Kunstwerke des Kosmos, und ich war völlig fasziniert von ihrer Natur und Schönheit. Als ich weiter über Mikrometeoriten las, fand ich heraus, dass einige von ihnen Quasikristalle enthalten - eine kristalline Struktur, die geordnet ist, eine atomare Struktur, die den gesamten Raum perfekt ausfüllt, aber nicht symmetrisch ist wie Kristalle. Ich dachte, das ist etwas Wunderschönes - etwas, das perfekt ist, obwohl es von Natur aus unvollkommen ist. Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass etwas mit mir, der Aufnahme, Jon Larsen und den Mikrometeoriten übereinstimmte - und ich wusste, dass ich dieses Album "Quasicrystal" nennen musste!

Zuvor, als ich neues Material für mein Debütalbum "Nebula" (Vilkka Wahl Quintet) schrieb, wurde mir klar, dass ich diese Musik eher mit dieser speziellen Gruppe von Musikern, einer Band, als mit mir selbst in Verbindung bringen wollte. Die Kompositionen geben die Stimmung vor und bilden den Rahmen für die Musik, aber für mich war es wichtig, den musikalischen und persönlichen Beitrag jedes Musikers in dieser Gruppe zu erkennen. Die Musik lebt in den Seelen der Spieler und erhält ihre Form durch ihre Interaktionen. Daher wollte ich wirklich eine Band um diese Musik herum gründen, anstatt zu versuchen, sie in meiner Person zu verkörpern - sie als das zu umarmen und zu feiern, was sie wirklich ist: ein Zusammentreffen von Geistern, perfekt in ihren innewohnenden Unvollkommenheiten.

Internationale Besetzungen, wie die von KAIHO, bringen natürlich eine Reihe von Herausforderungen mit sich, aber ich denke, wir haben irgendwo in diesem europäischen Jazz-Universum einen einzigartigen Sound für uns gefunden, und ich hoffe, dass dies erst der Anfang des Fluges dieses Quasikristalls ist!
