Why are stories even better told with ten musicians? Because each instrument adds a new layer of storytelling by taking on its own role in the music.
VOLO tells the stories of life, portraying them through a micro-world of ten unique perspectives that merge into a colorful and intricate macro-sound. Together, the musicians capture a moment in time, unraveling all its emotions and thoughts.
This large ensemble unites the young jazz scenes of Cologne, Mainz, Basel, Stuttgart and Berlin, and is led by Sofia Will, alto saxophonist and composer.
With VOLO, she won the RECORDING PROJECT 2023 organized by the LOFT Cologne and the Jazzfest Bonn Sponsorship Award 2024.

Growing up in Bonn – a city also founded by the Romans – Sofia Will was always fascinated by the rich history of cities along the Rhine River. When she moved to Mainz to begin her music studies, it was her first time living away from home, facing the challenges of adulthood. Mainz turned out to be the best city to navigate this transition. The Rhine River and the Roman history provided two constants that helped her stay connected to their roots, while also offering a new city to explore. Mainz became Sofia Will’s new home.
The idea for VOLO was born at the end of Will’s time in Mainz. VOLO is the Latin translation of her surname. The years there left her with countless life experiences. There were relationships that faded, friendships that blossomed, losses of loved ones, successes and disappointments – and a pandemic. To release the weight of these emotions, she turned them into music.
Some compositions were written during Sofia Will’s time in Mainz, while others took shape after she moved away. The three-part suite "Moguntia", for example, was composed during her final year in Mainz, capturing three stages of realizing that her time there was coming to an end:
"Mainz du das ernst?" (Are you serious?) describes the pain of being deceived by someone they trusted, forever tainting every good memory you once shared with them. Walking through the city and recalling those moments now feels unsettling.
"Mai(nz)" was written in May and explores the process of outgrowing your city, leaving you suddenly lost in a place that once felt like home.
Finally, "Vergissmainznicht" (Forget-me-not) expresses the hope that, even after moving away, you will never forget the great memories, while also wishing that the city will remember you in return.

Um die Gewicht dieser Gefühle loszulassen, wandelte sie es in Musik um.

„Mainz du das ernst?“ beschreibt den Schmerz der Täuschung durch jemanden, dem man vertraut hat, und somit jede gute Erinnerung, die man mit dieser Person geteilt hat, für immer verdirbt. Spaziergänge durch die gemeinsame Stadt erinnern an diese Momente und fühlen sich unwohl an.
„Mai(nz)“ wurde im Mai geschrieben und beschäftigt sich mit dem Prozess, aus der eigenen Stadt herauszuwachsen und sich plötzlich verloren zu fühlen in einem Ort, der einst ein Zuhause war.
